Gerhart Hauptmann (November 15, 1862 - June 6, 1946), German dramatist, was born around at Obersalzbrunn, Germany (nowadays Szczawno Drój, Poland) in Silesia, the boy of the hotel-hosteller.

From either a village school of his natlve place he passed, to the Realschule within Breslau, and was so sent to see agriculture in his uncle's domestic at Jauer.
